WCU reps in Mexico to study Mayan language, art

Representatives of Western Carolina University’s Cherokee studies program and the Fine Art Museum have traveled to San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the Mexican state of Chiapas, to learn about the Mayan art and language.

Western Carolina University’s electric department recently was presented a 2008 Safety Award from ElectriCities of North Carolina for achieving a perfect record of no lost workday accidents during 2008.

Pride of the Mountains to receive ultimate prize for marching bands Oct. 24

Representatives of the John Philip Sousa Foundation will be on hand Saturday, Oct. 24, to present the prestigious Sudler Trophy, the nation’s highest and most-coveted award for college and university marching bands, to Western Carolina University’s Pride of the Mountains Marching Band.

Center for Service Learning launches Catamount Student Service Corps

The Center for Service Learning has launched the Catamount Student Service Corps to replace the Jacob Spencer Medford Scholars program. Through this initiative – organized in conjunction with the federal work-study program – students will engage in leadership roles in some of the center’s programs and projects.

Student artist to be commissioned to create Josefina Niggli portrait

The Western Carolina University 2009 Josefina Niggli Celebration Committee and Fine Art Museum will commission a WCU student artist to create a work of art that embodies the spirit and character of Niggli, an acclaimed WCU faculty member, writer, poet and theater and movie director.

Winford Gordon, an assistant professor of psychology at Western Carolina University, will present “Listen Carefully in Case Life Happens” at the Last Lecture Series event on Friday, Oct. 16.
