GESAMP is an advisory body, established in 1969, that advises the United Nations system on the scientific aspects of marine environmental protection. Young was asked to join the advisory group in recognition of the global reach of his work in tracking global sand mining, which is done in collaboration with a number of international partners.

In mid-November, he traveled to the headquarters of UNEP in Nairobi, Kenya, to address the assembly and kick off a United Nations effort to begin tracking legal and illegal international sand mining and documenting the environmental and economic impacts of poorly managed mining.
