Set in communist Russia in the 1980s where “Dallas” was the only American show allowed on TV, “Hotel Dallas” explores real-life fascination with the show through surreal storytelling. The father of Livia, a post-1980s Romanian filmmaker, has built a hotel that is a replica of the house from “Dallas.” She has a crush on series star Patrick Duffy and emigrates to America to film him waking up in her father’s hotel.

“The film features time travel, John Wayne, musical numbers, a pastry box that doubles as a camera obscura, a newscaster who speaks in rhyming verse and a real-life Romanian cemetery where all the tombstones feature corny jokes about death,” Ungur said. “‘Hotel Dallas’ is essayistic in spirit, but kitchen sink maximalist in execution.”

Huang and Ungur are a husband-and-wife duo based in New York City. “Hotel Dallas” is their first feature film. They also work together on sculptures, installations and performances.

Southern Circuit screenings are funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
