A “Youth Swim Refresher” course will be offered during evenings in late October and early November by Western Carolina University’s Office of Continuing and Professional Education.
Classes will be held in the pool at Reid Gymnasium from 6:25 to 7:15 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Oct. 24-26 and Oct. 31-Nov. 2. The cost is $59.
Participants will be divided into two groups based on an assessment. The beginner group, appropriate for children 5 and older, will focus on developing skills such as bobbing, holding breath underwater, rhythmic breathing and floating. The advanced beginner, intermediate swimmer and advanced swimmer group, appropriate for children 7 and older, will focus on techniques such as front crawl, back crawl and breast stroke.
Classes will be taught by Michael Creason, a retired WCU faculty member who is certified by the American Red Cross to teach swimming to infants and children. Creason has been a swimming instructor for 40 years.
All participants will be required to read and agree to an assumption-of-risk waiver before taking part in the classes. For more information or to register, call the Office of Continuing and Professional Education at 828-227-7397 or visit swim.wcu.edu.
