Dance Marathon celebrating Child Health Day on Oct. 3

Western Carolina University students associated with Dance Marathon will unite with more than 300 Miracle Network Dance Marathon programs at colleges and universities across North America for Child Health Day on Monday, Oct. 3.

Self-proclaimed as “this generation fighting for the next,” participants in the movement work year-round to raise funds and awareness for a local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, providing much-needed pediatric equipment, treatments, research and charitable care.

In support of Child Health Day and Greenville Health System’s Children’s Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, WCU’s Dance Marathon is hosting a “Catamount $10,000 Challenge” through Monday, Oct. 3. Activities began Monday, Sept. 26, and continue through Oct. 3.

On Thursday, Sept. 29, and Friday, Sept. 30, students will be fundraising and registering dancers on the A.K. Hinds University Center lawn from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Other fundraising efforts include a special screening of the film “Morris from America” in the A.K. Hinds University Center theater at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29, with a minimum suggested donation of $3, and the sale of “meet and greet” tickets to meet the performers for WCU’s Homecoming concert that features Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Mayday Parade. Tickets priced at $15 and $20 will be available at 10 a.m. Sept. 30 at the second floor information desk in the University Center.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, during tailgating for WCU’s Family Weekend football game, Dance Marathon’s student executive committee will be hosting a fundraising and information table from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Then, on Child Health Day, the WCU campus community is asked to donate $1 through Facebook.

WCU Dance Marathon is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, with proceeds designated to help fund a child life specialist position at GHS Children’s Hospital. Child life specialists support and assist children whose parents are undergoing long-term medical care. Dance Marathon’s goal for this year is $18,000 and 400 dancers. The event is open to everyone.

WCU Dance Marathon is a year-round fundraising effort that typically involves about 250 people and  has fundraised $60,000 for GHS Children’s Hospital since it began in 2012.
