Summer Concert Series to kick off with The Honeycutters

Western Carolina University’s 2016 Summer Concert Series gets underway Wednesday, June 29, as the country roots band The Honeycutters performs on the lawn of A.K. Hinds University Center.

The free concert will begin at 7 p.m., and those planning to attend are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket for seating. In case of rain, the show will move indoors to the University Center Grandroom.

Based out of Asheville, The Honeycutters include songwriter Amanda Anne Platt along with Tal Taylor, mandolin; Rick Cooper, bass; Josh Milligan, drums; and Matt Smith, pedal steel guitar, electric guitar and dobro. The band members’ most notable appearances include performing at MerleFest, and they also have shared the stage with Guy Clark, Tony Rice, Donna the Buffalo and the Steep Canyon Rangers.

Craig Havighurst of the roots and Americana music variety show “Music City Roots” has commented on the band’s “sweet-toned and melodious aura,” while folk music writer Kim Ruehl called The Honeycutters “a great band replete with tasty harmonies.”

All the concerts in WCU’s summer series begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. Upcoming shows include Brent Cobb, July 6; The Southern Experience Band, July 13; Mangas Colorado, July 20; and Balsam Range, July 27.
