IT tests latest operating systems for use on WCU network

WCU’s Division of Information Technology is testing the latest computer operating systems from Microsoft and Apple to ensure they can be used on the campus network.

IT requests that users of university-owned computers refrain from upgrading their operating systems until their testing is finished.

IT requests that users of university-owned computers refrain from upgrading their operating systems until their testing is finished.

“Once testing is complete, our projection is to make Windows 10 (Dell computers) and Mac OS X El Capitan (Apple computers) available for current and newly purchased computers during this semester,” said Heath Smathers, IT’s team leader of desktop services.

The division then plans to install the new operating systems on computers in IT-supported classrooms and Open Access Student Labs by the start of the fall 2016 semester, Smathers said. “Office 2016 is also being tested and will be released on the same schedule as Windows 10 and Mac OS X El Capitan,” he added.

The testing is needed to confirm that the new operating systems work well with other software and applications running on the network, such as Blackboard and MyCat.

Until those tests are complete and possible conflicts are found and resolved, Smathers said that updating computers owned by WCU would be premature.

“At this time, we recommend that campus users do not upgrade to Windows 10, Mac OS X El Capitan, or Office 2016,” Smathers said. “Once IT completes testing, an announcement will be made to campus for faculty and staff members who would like to upgrade the university-owned computers they use. Newly purchased Dell and Apple computers will come with latest operating system and Office 2016 when testing is complete, he said.

Users of university-owned computers who have questions about the testing, the new operating systems or upgrading can contact the Help Desk or visit the Technology Commons for assistance, or call 828-227-7487 or 866-928-7487 toll-free between 7:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. weekdays. Chat and walk-in hours at the Commons are posted at: http://tc.wcu.edu/.
