The tradition is an effort to reassure families and friends of the deceased students that members of the university share their grief and sorrow, Miller said. This year’s ceremony was held in memory of Stephanie S. Deese, a junior from Monroe who died from injuries sustained in a car accident adjacent to campus in March; Collin A. Jones, a graduate student from Hendersonville who died in December; Sean William Braswell, a rising sophomore from Lenoir who died last May while home for summer break; and Joshua Paul Fulcher, a graduate student from Clemmons who was found deceased last April in his off-campus residence.
