Grant supports study of potential antibiotics

The N.C. Biotechnology Center awarded a $5,000 undergraduate biotechnology research fellowship to Jason Clement, assistant professor of chemistry, and undergraduate research student Rachel Bleich to isolate and characterize potential antibiotics from local microbial sources.

Working in collaboration with Seán O’Connell, associate professor of microbiology, Clement and Bleich will scale up production of four antibiotic-producing microbial strains previously isolated by O’Connell, and isolate and characterize potential antibiotics from these sources.
